A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's major government projects.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” declared the national leader.
The president reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's strategic vision for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a significant increase of its role in public infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated rate, surpassing forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised persistent concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party urged an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This pause was requested while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."
In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in full accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these vital projects.
